At the end of the first four months of 2021, Mexican ports have registered an increase in the container movement by 10.5%. Compared to the statistics registered for the first quarter of 2020, a very promising increase is evident.
After the arrival of the pandemic that has hit the world since February 2020, there is finally good news. These data promise us a global economic recovery . Let’s see in this article more information regarding port movements.
With the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a dramatic drop in container movement , which now appears to be reversing.
The COVID-19 pandemic is a milestone in the history of the world economy. In fact, since the beginning of this disease, an increase in the movement of containers has been seen for the first time.
So, during the months of January and February 2021, more than 41 million tons were moved in national ports. However, this is 10% less, than what was moved in the same period of 2020, when container movement registered almost 47 million tons.
These figures were issued by the SCT ( Ministry of Communications and Transportation ), and showed a negative impact produced by the pandemic on the economy.
The figures provided by the SCT revealed that, in January and February, they operated more than 1,158,000 TEUs. This is a 3.9% decline in container movement . This is compared to the figures for those same months in 2020, when COVID-19 was not yet global.
For this four-month period of 2021, the SCT reported that t he ports of Mexico experienced a significant increase of 10.5% in the movement of containers .
The Ministry of Communications and Transportation has issued information about the movement of containers in ports. In it, he indicated that the movement of containers registered operations of almost 1,800,000 tons (TEU), after March 2021.
Compared to container movement in 2020, which had movements of 1,600,000 TEU, this represented an increase of 10.5%. Let’s see how these movements were distributed.
In exports, the movement of containers operated almost 885,000 TEU, with an increase of 8.4% compared to the almost 817 thousand TEU recorded in the same period of 2020.
Imports had a 12.7% increase in the four-month period, compared to the same period of 2020. This container movement registered an operation of almost 894,000 TEU, compared to the 792,500 at the end of March 2020. This indicates an increase of 3.8 % in the movement of containers in this sector.
The full container operation amounted to almost 1,255,000 TEUs. This is an increase of 11.6% compared to 1,124,000 TEU for the same date last year.
The movement of empty containers was almost 525,000 TEU at the end of April this year compared to 485,595 TEU in the same period of the previous year. This meant an increase of more than 8%.
The ports of the Pacific Ocean made total operations of 1,234,000 TEU during the first quarter of 2021. This constituted a 10.5% increase compared to the first quarter of 2020 in the movement of containers. Next, let’s look at the merchandise involved in the movement of containers in the Gulf of Mexico so far in 2021:
Merchandise | Quantity TEU | Percentage +/- |
Oil and derivatives | 15.462.621 | -20% |
Other liquids | 1.901.435 | 8,3% |
Minerals | 9.337.783 | 0,2% |
Agricultural products | 2.627.350 | 6,3% |
Loose cargo | 4.024.423 | 4,0% |
Regarding the movement of passenger cruises, the trend was downward. The exacerbation of the pandemic has forced the adoption of worldwide restrictions. That is why the movement of passengers on cruise ships has been zero so far in 2021.
We can conclude that, in this first quarter of 2021, container movements began to increase their operations .
Though at the beginning of 2021 the trend of container movement in ports was downward, it soon began to rise. As the first four months of 2021 have elapsed, ports increase the movement of containers by 10.5% .
This shows that the world economy has begun to recover despite the pandemic, with the development of humanity in the new normal. Thus, it is important to note that the handling and transport of goods requires experienced personnel for good logistics. Contact us!
